World Championship Titles and Medals Galore for Hayle Surf Life Saving Club
at Rescue 2010 in Egypt

Sixteen Cornish Surf Life Savers who competed at Rescue 2010 (Lifesaving World Championships) in Alexandria, Egypt between 2 & 17 October came home with an incredible haul of 24 medals – 5 Gold, 10 Silver and 9 Bronze, 3 Individual World Titles and 2 Team World Titles.

Eleven members of the Club joined by Martyn (Minnie) Fry, Adrian (Horace) Parsons and Paul Cottell of Bude SLSC, Paul Benney of Crantock SLSC and Maggie Mann of Newquay SLSC took part in the Championships over two weeks and included events for National Teams, Masters Teams, Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) Teams, Surf Boat Teams and an Interclub Event.

Team Manager, Alan Roberts, said “Rescue 2010 was originally going to take place in Newquay, instead we had a very long trip to Alexandria, where the accommodation was pretty bad and a definite culture shock, but we had all had a really good time and were blown away with our medal haul in the Masters World Championships with the help of our friends from Bude, Crantock and Newquay SLS Clubs. Even though we are this year’s Cornish Masters Champions we never imagined we would come home with so many medals and World Champions. All the team did very well but there were some outstanding performances, namely our Club Captain, Dave Parker, who won the 35-39 yr old Board Race and helped myself and Adrian Parsons become Board Relay World Champions in the 130+ age group by completing a storming last leg to overtake the Aussie competitor when he was already 1/3rd of the way around the course much to the surprise of the Australian supporters. I will never forget that fantastic feeling standing on the podium and being presented with my Gold medal. Another shock for the Australian clubs came when our women’s Beach Relay team comprising Traci Parker, Carol Penberthy and Maggie Mann resoundingly beat the undefeated Australian Team representing Kurrawa SLSC by a considerable margin to win the gold medal and World Championship Title in the 150+ age group.

Four members (including 2 juniors) of the club also took park in the IRB World Championships managing to make 2 of the finals and missing out on a Bronze medal in the Mass Rescue event by a whisker.

Four members (including 2 juniors) then went on to compete in the Inter Club event and although they were disappointed that the surf had dropped off by then gained valuable experience competing on the World stage against Clubs from Australia, America, Europe, Africa, New Zealand and Asia.

We were also delighted to witness Dan Humble, who has competed for Portreath SLSC but was representing his Australian Club, Trigg Island SLSC, become the World Ski Race Champion in the Inter Club event.”

Lots of information about the Club can be found on their website at http://hayleslscnews.website.orange.co.uk/ or by telephoning Club Captain, Dave Parker on 01736 755303. The Club train all year round and qualifications can be gained as a Beach Lifeguard or IRB crewman or driver along with many other awards.
